RESUMO

Three new species of Eigenmannia belonging to the E. trilineata species-group are described. The first species is described from rio Mearim basin and can be diagnosed by lateral line stripe restricted to last two thirds of body, superior midlateral stripe present, 176-205 anal-fin rays, 10-15 scales rows above lateral line, 109-125 lateral line scales, 19-23 premaxillary teeth, 20-29 dentary teeth, 6-10 endopterygoid teeth, and 13-14 precaudal vertebrae. The second species is described from upper rio Parnaíba, and can be diagnosed by lateral line stripe restricted to last two-thirds of body, ii,11-13 pectoral-fin rays, 180-196 anal-fin rays, 12-15 scales rows above lateral line, 10-14 premaxillary teeth, 15-21 dentary teeth, 8-10 endopterygoid teeth, and 14 precaudal vertebrae. The third species is widespread in rio Parnaíba basin, and can be diagnosed by absence of lateral line stripe, absence of superior midlateral stripe, 182-228 anal-fin rays, 12-15 scales rows above lateral line, 107-131 lateral line scales, 32-34 premaxillary teeth, 35-44 dentary teeth, 9-12 endopterygoid teeth, and 13 precaudal vertebrae. A dichotomous key and the conservation status for the three species are provided.(AU)


Três espécies novas de Eigenmannia pertencentes ao grupo E. trilineata são descritas. A primeira espécie é descrita para a bacia do rio Mearim e pode ser diagnosticada por apresentar faixa da linha lateral restrita aos últimos dois terços do corpo, faixa médio lateral superior presente, 176-205 raios na nadadeira anal, 10-15 fileiras de escamas acima da linha lateral, 109-125 escamas na linha lateral, 19-23 dentes pré-maxilares, 20-29 dentes no dentário, 6-10 dentes no endopterigóide, e 13-14 vértebras pré-caudais. A segunda espécie é descrita do alto rio Parnaíba, e pode ser diagnosticada por apresentar faixa da linha lateral restrita aos últimos dois terços do corpo, ii,11-13 raios na nadadeira peitoral, 180-196 raios na nadadeira anal, 12-15 fileiras de escamas acima da linha lateral, 10-14 dentes pré-maxilares, 15-21 dentes no dentário, 8-10 dentes no endopterigóide, e 14 vértebras pré-caudais. A terceira espécie está amplamente distribuída na bacia do rio Parnaíba, e pode ser diagnosticada pela ausência de faixa na linha lateral, ausência da faixa médio lateral superior, 182-228 raios na nadadeira anal, 12-15 fileiras de escamas acima da linha lateral, 107-131 escamas na linha lateral, 32-34 dentes pré-maxilares, 35-44 dentes no dentário, 9-12 dentes no endopterigóides, e 13 vértebras pré-caudais. Uma chave dicotômica e o status de conservação para as três espécies são fornecidas.(AU)

In the Brazilian Atlantic Forest (AF), many terrestrial species with broad geographical distributions show high diversity and endemism of intraspecific lineages, as revealed by molecular genetic data. This pattern, however, is less explored in freshwater fishes. Gymnotus pantherinus is an electric fish endemic to the Brazilian coastal drainages that shows a wide distribution, ranging from the states of Bahia to Santa Catarina, an unusual pattern for AF fishes. It has been hypothesized that G. pantherinus is a species complex because distinct morphotypes were described for the species based on morphometric and meristic features. We used mitochondrial and nuclear data to test this hypothesis. Based on phylogenetic inference and multi-locus, multispecies coalescent methods, we identified six independent lineages, flagging them as candidate species. One such lineage is the recently described species G. refugio that is nested within G. pantherinus and renders it paraphyletic, showing it is a species complex. We named G. pantherinus stricto sensu the lineage that includes samples from the type locality (Santos, SP). Our results show that genetic lineages correspond only partially and far exceed the number of previously reported morphotypes. Genetic breaks in the group correspond to landscape features associated with the Serra do Mar mountain range and with riverine dynamics caused by sea level changes during the last glacial maximum. Moreover, we found evidence of river capture events affecting phylogeographic structure in the group. We uncovered an important dimension of diversity in the group and encourage further integration of genetic and phenotypic data. Such integration is a fruitful approach not only to reduce the gap between taxonomy and evolutionary history in Gymnotidae, but also to uncover the real AF biodiversity.

RESUMO

A new species of Eigenmannia is described from the Rio Paraná (the Grande, Paranapanema and Tietê basins). This new species is distinguished from all congeners by colouration pattern, position of the mouth, relative depth of posterodorsal expansion on infraorbitals 1 + 2, number of teeth, osteological features, number of rows of scales above lateral line (LL) and morphometric data. Comments on the widened cephalic lateral-line canals of Sternopygidae and a dichotomous key to the species of Eigenmannia from the Rio Paraná Basin are provided.

A new species of ghost knifefish, Apteronotus, is described from high-energy environments in the Rios Mapuera and Trombetas (at Cachoeira Porteira waterfalls), Brazil. X-ray microcomputed tomography (µCT scan) was used to access the internal anatomy of the type series. The new species is distinguished from all congeners by the anteriormost position of the anus, with its posterior margin extending less than one eye diameter beyond the vertical through the caudal limit of the posterior nostril, the low number of anal-fin rays (117-125) and the reduced number of branchiostegal rays (three). A series of modifications associated with secondary sexual dimorphism on the preorbital region of mature males are depicted and discussed. In addition, comments on homologies of the branchiostegal rays in Apteronotidae are provided.

From a study of morphological and molecular datasets we determine that a species originally described as Sternarchogiton preto does not form a monophyletic group with the other valid species of Sternarchogiton including the type species, S. nattereri. Previously-published phylogenetic analyses indicate that this species is sister to a diverse clade comprised of six described apteronotid genera. We therefore place it into a new genus diagnosed by the presence of three cranial fontanels, first and second infraorbital bones independent (not fused), the absence of an ascending process on the endopterygoid, and dark brown to black pigments over the body surface and fins membranes. We additionally provide a redescription of this enigmatic species with an emphasis on its osteology, and provide the first documentation of secondary sexual dimorphism in this species.(AU)


RESUMO Através de um estudo com dados morfológicos e moleculares, nós propomos que a espécie originalmente descrita como Sternarchogiton preto não forma um grupo monofilético com outras espécies válidas de Sternarchogiton incluindo a espécie-tipo, S. nattereri. Análises filogenéticas anteriormente publicadas indicam que essa espécie é irmã de um clado diverso contendo seis gêneros descritos de Apteronotidae. Nós então a alocamos em um novo gênero diagnosticado pela presença de três fontanelas craniais, primeiro e segundo ossos infraorbitais independentes (não fusionados), ausência de um processo ascendente do endopterigoide e pigmentação marrom-escura à negra sobre a superfície do corpo e membranas das nadadeiras. Adicionalmente, nós realizamos a redescrição dessa enigmática espécie com ênfase na sua osteologia, e fazemos o primeiro registro de dimorfismo sexual secundário nessa espécie.(AU)

RESUMO

Eigenmannia is one of the more taxonomically complex genera within the Gymnotiformes. Here we adopt an integrative taxonomic approach, combining osteology, COI gene sequences, and geometric morphometrics to describe three new species belonging to the E. trilineata species group from Colombian trans-Andean region. These new species increase the number of species in the E. trilineata complex to 18 and the number of species in the genus to 25. The distribution range of the E. trilineata species group is expanded to include parts of northwestern South America and southern Central America.(AU)


Eigenmannia es uno de los géneros taxonómicamente más complejos dentro de los Gymnotiformes. En este artículo adoptamos un enfoque taxonómico integrador, que combina osteología, secuencias del gene COI y morfometría geométrica, para describir tres nuevas especies que pertenecen al grupo de especies de E. trilineata de la región transandina de Colombia. Estas nuevas especies aumentan el número de especies en el complejo E. trilineata a 18 y el número de especies en el género a 25. El rango de distribución del grupo de especies de E. trilineata se ha expandido al noroeste de Sudamérica y el sur de América Central.(AU)

The diversity of gymnotid electric fishes has been intensely studied over the past 25 years, with 35 species named since 1994, compared to 11 species in the previous 236 years. Substantial effort has also been applied in recent years to documenting gymnotid interrelationships, with seven systematic studies published using morphological and molecular datasets. Nevertheless, until now, all gymnotids have been assigned to one of just two supraspecific taxa, the subfamily Electrophorinae with one genus Electrophorus and three valid species and the subfamily Gymnotine also with one genus Gymnotus and 43 valid species. This simple classification has obscured the substantial phenotypic and lineage diversity within the subfamily Gymnotine and hampered ecological and evolutionary studies of gymnotid biology. Here we present the most well-resolved and taxon-complete phylogeny of the Gymnotidae to date, including materials from all but one of the valid species. This phylogeny was constructed using a five-gene molecular dataset and a 115-character morphological dataset, enabling the inclusion of several species for which molecular data are still lacking. This phylogeny was time-calibrated using biogeographical priors in the absence of a fossil record. The tree topology is similar to those of previous studies, recovering all the major clades previously recognized with informal names. We propose a new gymnotid classification including two subfamilies (Electrophorinae and Gymnotinae) and six subgenera within the genus Gymnotus. Each subgenus exhibits a distinctive biogeographic distribution, within which most species have allopatric distributions and the subgenera are diverged from one another by an estimated 5-35 million years. We further provide robust taxonomic diagnoses, descriptions and identification keys to all gymnotid subgenera and all but four species. This new taxonomy more equitably partitions species diversity among supra-specific taxa, employing the previously vacant subgenus and subfamily ranks. This new taxonomy renders known gymnotid diversity more accessible to study by highlighting the deep divergences (chronological, geographical, genetic and morphological) among its several clades.

A detailed osteological study of the poorly known and critical endangered ghost knifefish, Tembeassu marauna, from the rio Paraná, Brazil, was conducted using X-ray microcomputed tomography (µCT scan). A redescription of the external anatomy was performed, including the unusual presence of a rostral patch of extra teeth on the region of the upper lip anterior to the premaxilla and the prominent anterior fleshy expansions in both upper and lower lips. The newly surveyed characters were included and analyzed in light of a recent morphological data matrix for Gymnotiformes. In spite of some uncertainties that remains as to phylogenetic allocation of the genus, the most probable hypothesis is that Tembeassu is the sister group of a clade that includes Megadontognathus and Apteronotus sensu stricto. The phylogenetic analysis also supports that Tembeassu is considered a valid genus of Apteronotidae. An amended diagnosis for the genus is also provided.

A new species of Eigenmannia is described from the rio Mutum, tributary of upper rio Juruena, rio Tapajós basin, Comodoro, Mato Grosso, Brazil. The new species is distinguished from all congeners by coloration pattern, position of the mouth, number of scales rows above lateral line, number of premaxillary and dentary teeth, number of precaudal vertebrae, orbital diameter, mouth width, relative depth of posterodorsal expansion on infraorbitals 1+2 and relative size of coronomeckelian bone. Comments on potentially useful characters in phylogenetic studies derived from musculature, discussion on Eigenmannia species-group and the first dichotomous key for Eigenmannia are provided.

Ghost knifefishes (Gymnotiformes: Apteronotidae) are weakly electric fishes that possess a high-frequency, neurogenic electric organ discharge. They are found throughout the humid Neotropics from Panama to Argentina and are most diverse and abundant in the channels of large lowland rivers. Apteronotidae is the most species-rich family of Neotropical electric knifefishes with 96 valid species in 15 genera. We present a phylogenetic hypothesis based on molecular sequence data from three mitochondrial genes (16S, coi, cytb) and four nuclear loci (glyt, rag2, ryr3, zic1). Our analysis includes sequence data for 203 samples in 54 species and 14 genera, making it the most densely-sampled and data-rich phylogeny of the Apteronotidae to date. Our results corroborate previous phylogenetic hypotheses with the placement of Orthosternarchus + Sternarchorhamphus sister to all other apteronotids, a non-monophyletic Apterontotus, and a sister relationship between Sternarchorhynchus and the Navajini. We also report several novel relationships, particularly within the Navajini and among several species of the nominal genus Apteronotus not previously included in phylogenetic analyses. We additionally provide a new classification for the family.

Resolving patterns of ancient and rapid diversifications is one of the most challenging tasks in evolutionary biology. These difficulties arise from confusing phylogenetic signals that are associated with the interplay of incomplete lineage sorting (ILS) and homoplasy. Phylogenomic analyses of hundreds, or even thousands, of loci offer the potential to resolve such contentious relationships. Yet, how much useful phylogenetic information these large data sets contain remains uncertain and often goes untested. Here, we assess the utility of different data filtering approaches to maximize phylogenetic information and minimize noise when reconstructing an ancient radiation of Neotropical electric knifefishes (Order Gymnotiformes) using ultraconserved elements. We found two contrasting hypotheses of gymnotiform evolutionary relationships depending on whether phylogenetic inferences were based on concatenation or coalescent methods. In the first case, all analyses inferred a previously-and commonly-proposed hypothesis, where the family Apteronotidae was found as the sister group to all other gymnotiform families. In contrast, coalescent-based analyses suggested a novel hypothesis where families producing pulse-type (viz., Gymnotidae, Hypopomidae, and Rhamphichthyidae) and wave-type electric signals (viz., Apteronotidae, Sternopygidae) were reciprocally monophyletic. Nodal support for this second hypothesis increased when analyzing loci with the highest phylogenetic information content and further increased when data were pruned using targeted filtering methods that maximized phylogenetic informativeness at the deepest nodes of the Gymnotiformes. Bayesian concordance analyses and topology tests of individual gene genealogies demonstrated that the difficulty of resolving this radiation was likely due to high gene-tree incongruences that resulted from ILS. We show that data filtering reduces gene-tree heterogeneity and increases nodal support and consistency of species trees using coalescent methods; however, we failed to observe the same effect when using concatenation methods. Furthermore, the targeted filtering strategies applied here support the use of "gene data interrogation" rather than "gene genealogy interrogation" approaches in phylogenomic analyses, to extract phylogenetic signal from intractable portions of the Tree of Life.

Weakly electric fishes continually emit electric organ discharges (EOD) as a means of communication and localization of objects in their surroundings. Depending on water conductivity, the amplitude of the electric field generated is known to increase with decreases in electrical conductivity of the water. In Amazonian terra firme streams, water conductivity is extremely low and fluctuates constantly due to local and regional rains. In this context, the space between freely moving weakly electric fishes may be expected to decrease, on average, with an increase in water conductivity. To test this hypothesis, we recorded the positions at rest of the sand-dwelling fish Gymnorhamphichthys rondoni in a terra firme stream for several days in alternating months, over two years. Based on daily nearest neighbor distances among individual fish in a grid, we found a uniform temporal distribution pattern (which was not affected by water conductivity) indicative of site fidelity. Here we highlight the role of other factors that could influence resting site fidelity.(AU)


Los peces eléctricos emiten continuamente descargas con su órgano eléctrico (DOE) para comunicarse y localizar objetos a su alrededor. Dependiendo de la conductividad del agua, la amplitud del campo eléctrico generado aumenta con una disminución en la conductividad eléctrica del agua. En los arroyos de terra firme amazónicos, la conductividad eléctrica del agua es extremadamente baja y fluctua constantemente dependiendo de las lluvias locales y regionales. Teniendo esto en cuenta, esperamos que el espacio entre peces eléctricos débiles con libertad de movimiento disminuya, en promedio, de acuerdo al incremento en la conductividad del agua. Para evaluar esta hipótesis, registramos bajo condiciones naturales por varios dias en meses alternos y durante dos años las posiciones en reposo del pez Gymnorhamphichthys rondoni en un arroyo de terra firme. Con los valores de registro diario de la distancia al vecino mas cercano en peces individuales dentro de una grilla, encontramos un patrón de distribución temporal uniforme (que no fue afectado por la conductividad del agua) e indicativo de una fidelidad por los sitios de reposo. Entonces, nosotros resaltamos aquí el posible papel que otros factores pueden estar jugando para entender la fidelidad por sus sitios de reposo.(AU)

The Gymnotus inaequilabiatus is a Neotropical fish widely distributed in marginal areas of bays. The aim of this study was to describe the main histological and histopathological traits in the head and exocrine kidney. Here, histometric and structural density techniques were associated with renosomatic index (RSI). The kidney was processed for light microscopy. Lipofuscin and hemosiderin content were visually estimated in the melonomacrophages centers (MMCs). All the biometric body variables were correlated with RSI, especially the kidney weight and gross lesions count. The general architecture of head and exocrine kidney was similar to that described for other teleost species. MMCs were prevalent in both portions and correlated with RSI in the head and exocrine kidney. Granulomatous structures were often observed in both portions; however, they were associated only in the exocrine kidney with RSI. Of all the structures hystometrically estimated, only proximal tubular diameter and thickness, and distal tubular thickness were correlated to renosomatic index. The RSI is an useful biometric variable that represent some physiological and morphological characteristics of kidney in G. inaequilabiatus. These findings may be used in future studies to evaluate the effects of environmental stressors on the renal adaptative physiological process.(AU)


Gymnotus inaequilabiatus é um peixe neotropical amplamente distribuído em áreas marginais de baías. O objetivo deste estudo foi descrever características anatômicas, histológicas e histopatológicas no rim cefálico e exócrino. Análises histométricas e a densidade volumétrica estrutural foram associadas ao índice renossomático (IRS). Fragmentos de ambos tecidos foram processados para análise e microscopia de campo claro. O conteúdo de lipofuscina e hemossiderina foi estimado visualmente nos centros de melanomacrófagos (CMMs). Todas as variáveis corporais biométricas foram correlacionadas com o IRS, principalmente o peso renal e a contagem de lesões superficiais. A arquitetura geral do rim cefálico e exócrino foi semelhante à descrita para outras espécies de teleósteos. Os CMMs foram frequentes em ambas as porções e correlacionaram-se com o IRS. Estruturas granulomatosas foram frequentemente observadas em ambas porções; no entanto, foram associadas ao IRS apenas no rim exócrino. De todas as estruturas estimadas histometricamente, apenas o diâmetro e espessura dos túbulos proximais e distais correlacionaram-se ao IRS. Este índice mostrou-se uma variável útil associada a características fisiológicas e morfológicas do rim de G. inaequilabiatus. Esses achados podem ser empregados em futuros estudos a fim de avaliar efeitos ambientais bem como processos adaptativos fisiológicos.(AU)

The capture of live bait for sport fishing is an important activity for fishing communities. The main species used for this purpose are members of the genus Gymnotus, which comprises numerous species of cryptic nature that are difficult to identify based on external morphology. The aims of this work were to identify through partial sequences of the COI gene Gymnotus species fished in the Jacaré-Guaçu River, SP, and to develop a molecular diagnostic approach using PCR-RFLP to identify these species. Partial COI sequences were compared to those of other species deposited in GenBank. The sequences were assessed in the NEBCutter program to determine restriction sites in the sequence and the enzymes to be tested. Phenetic analysis performed by Neighbor-Joining method showed that the specimens sampled belong to two species preliminary identified here as G. cf. sylvius and G. cf. cuia, with G. cf. sylvius accounting for 95.2% of the individuals sampled. The enzymes NlaIII and SacI generated fragments that allowed distinguishing the Gymnotus species using PCR-RFLP. This analysis can be used to accurately identify these species, which is fundamental for monitoring Gymnotus fishing and assessing the conservation of this genetic resource.(AU)


A captura de iscas-vivas para a pesca esportiva constitui uma atividade importante em comunidades de pescadores. As principais espécies utilizadas para este propósito pertencem ao gênero Gymnotus, o qual compreende inúmeras espécies de natureza críptica que dificulta a identificação baseada na morfologia externa. Os objetivos deste trabalho foram identificar através de sequências parciais do gene COI, espécies de Gymnotus capturadas no Rio Jacaré-Guaçu, Ibitinga, SP, e desenvolver um diagnóstico molecular por meio de PCR-RFLP. Sequências parciais de COI foram comparadas com outras espécies depositadas no GenBank. As sequências foram analisadas no Programa NebCutter para determinar os sítios de restrição e definir as enzimas a serem testadas. A análise fenética pelo método de Neighbor-Joining mostrou que os espécimes pertencem a duas espécies identificadas preliminarmente aqui como G. cf. sylvius e G. cf. cuia, sendo que G. cf. sylvius representou 95,2% dos indivíduos amostrados. As enzimas NlaIII e SacI geraram fragmentos que permitiram discriminar as espécies por meio de PCR-RFLP. Esta análise pode ser usada na identificação precisa destas espécies, fundamental na proposição de monitoramento da pesca de Gymnotus na região e para medidas adequadas de conservação.(AU)

Microsatellites show great abundance in eukaryotic genomes, although distinct chromosomal distribution patterns might be observed, from small dispersed signals to strong clustered motifs. In Neotropical fishes, the chromosome mapping of distinct microsatellites was employed several times to uncover the origin and evolution of sex and supernumerary chromosomes, whereas a detailed comparative analysis considering different motifs at the chromosomal level is scarce. Here, we report the chromosomal location of several simple sequence repeats (SSRs) in distinct electric knife fishes showing variable diploid chromosome numbers to unveil the structural organization of several microsatellite motifs in distinct Gymnotus species. Our results showed that some SSRs are scattered throughout the genomes, whereas others are particularly clustered displaying intense genomic compartmentalization. Interestingly, the motifs CA, GA, and GAG exhibited a band-like pattern of hybridization, useful for the identification of homologous chromosomes. Finally, the colocalization of SSRs with multigene families is probably related to the association of microsatellites with gene spacers in this case.

The cytogenetic characteristics of Eigenmannia aff. trilineata were analyzed by basic and molecular cytogenetics, applying fluorescent in situ hybridization, with 18S and 5S rDNA and U2 snRNA probes. The species revealed a kind of polymorphism associated to ZZ/Z0 type sex chromosomes, with 2n = 32 (8m+2sm+22a, NF = 42) in all males under analysis, whereas females evidenced 2n = 31 (8m+1sm+22a, NF = 40). C-banding showed constitutive heterochromatin restricted to the pericentromeric region of all chromosomes and single-nucleolus organized regions on pair 11. A site for rDNA 5S was synthetic with a cluster of rDNA 18S near the centromere on the long arm of only one homologue of pair 11. Other clusters for 5S rDNA were sited on pairs 7, 10, 12, 13, and 16. Further, 5S rDNA was co-located with U2 cluster in the pericentromeric region of pair 12. Joint analysis of DNA barcoding from cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (COI) sequences, generated from the karyotyped samples of E. aff. trilineata, and sequences of other Gymnotiforms recognized E. aff. trilineata as an Operational Taxonomic Unit. Results foreground the hypothesis that cytotypes are independent evolution units as cryptic species with a low morphological differentiation level, although with high genetic/karyotype differentiation rates.

We report the first comparative cytogenetic analysis of two species from electrogenic fish of genus Rhabdolichops (Sternopygidae, Gymnotiformes): Rhabdolichops troscheli and Rhabdolichops cf eastwardi. R. troscheli has 2n = 54 (fundamental number [FN] = 66), whereas R. cf. eastwardi has 2n = 74 (FN = 78). C-banding revealed centromeric constitutive heterochromatin in both species. Ag-NORs mapped on pair 6 in R. troscheli and pair 30 in R. cf eastwardi. Fluorescense in situ hybridization with 18S rDNA probes confirmed the Ag-NOR staining results and revealed additional (presumably silent) ribosomal genes on pairs 12, 13, 21, 23, 26, and 27 in R. cf eastwardi. 5S rDNA was found on the centromeres of pair 7 in both species. Telomeric probes showed only distal locations. Dispersed signal patterns were obtained using probes for retrotransposons Rex1 and Rex3. Histone H1 and H3 genes were found together on pair 6 in R. cf eastwardi. The high diploid number found in Rhabdolichops suggests that chromosome fission may have contributed to its chromosomal evolution, phylogenetic relationship of the Sternopygidae suggests that this increase in diploid number could be a synapomorphic characteristic of genus Rhabdolichops. Although both species are phylogenetically close related, their karyotype structure has undergone divergent evolutionary directions. All in all, our results strongly suggest that R. cf eastwardi experencied recent intense genome reorganization.

Eigenmannia correntes, a new species belonging to the Eigenmannia trilineata species-group, is described from tributaries of rio Correntes, a major affluent of the rio Piquiri system, upper rio Paraguai basin (Mato Grosso and Mato Grosso do Sul states, Brazil). Eigenmannia correntes is included in the currently poorly defined sternopygid genus Eigenmannia (Ostariophysi: Gymnotiformes) by presenting characters that are either primitive or of uncertain polarity, such as eyes covered by skin, scales present over entire postcranial portion of body, teeth absent from oral valve, infraorbital bones 1+2 with enlarged posterodorsal expansion, and gill rakers short and unossified. The new species is distinguished from all congeners, except those species included in the Eigenmannia trilineata species-group, by the presence of a conspicuous superior midlateral stripe (synapomorphy of this clade). Eigenmannia correntes can be differentiated from all members of the Eigenmannia trilineata species-group, except E. vicentespelaea, E. waiwai and E. besouro, by its subterminal mouth (vs. terminal in remaining species of that group). Further, it differs from these aforementioned species by a number of meristic and morphometric characters, including number of premaxillary and dentary teeth, number of longitudinal series of scales above lateral line, number of pectoral-fin and anal-fin rays, eye diameter, postorbital distance, and snout length. Finally, notes on reproduction and parasitism for E. correntes are presented.

A list of all valid names of species of Neotropical electric fishes (Gymnotiformes) is presented herein. The list is arranged by family and genus and includes all available synonyms. The list is comprehensive through 2016 and includes 240 valid species distributed among 34 genera and five families, including one monotypic genus known only from the fossil record. The presented classification reflects recently published interpretations about the validity of the included names which, in general, are widely accepted. When the validity of a particular name is disputed in recent literature, we followed one of the published interpretations and provide relevant information on the alternate interpretation(s) in the remarks section of that name. Synonymies of some names need to be considered tentative, inasmuch as the types underlying those names are either absent or appear to be based on more than one taxon. First reviser actions (e.g., lectotype and neotype designations, resolution of simultaneous synonyms, etc.) are reported and include erroneous subsequent attempts at problem resolutions. Herein, we include one new first reviser action by selecting Gymnotus aequilabiatus Humboldt, 1805, as type species of Sternopygus because previous attempts to select a type did not follow the provisions of the Code of Zoological Nomenclature.(AU)

A new species of the Eigenmannia trilineata species group is described from the río Orinoco basin, Venezuela. The new species is distinguished from congeners by a unique set of characters including an ossified basibranchial 1; 198-217 anal-fin rays; suborbital depth, 21.3-26.1% HL; length of anterodorsal process of maxilla equal to the width of the posterior nostril; premaxilla with 17 teeth distributed in three rows; hyaline pectoral and anal fins; and number of scale series above lateral line, 9-10. It raises the number of species allocated to the Eigenmannia trilineata species group to 13 and the number of species within the genus to 18.(AU)


Se describe una nueva especie del grupo Eigenmannia trilineata de la cuenca del río Orinoco, Venezuela. La nueva especie se distingue de sus congéneres por una combinación única de caracteres, incluyendo el basibranquial 1 osificado; número de radios de la anal, 198-217; profundidad del suborbital, 21.3-26.1% HL; longitud del proceso anterodorsal de la maxila igual al ancho de la narina posterior; 17 dientes premaxilares distribuidos en tres hileras; aletas pectoral y anal hialinas; y 9-10 hileras de escamas sobre la serie de la línea lateral. La presente contribución eleva el número de especies del grupo Eigenmannia trilineata a 13, y a 18 aquellas dentro del género.(AU)
